Baja Sur road trips from Cabo San Lucas

Everything on this page starts in Cabo San Lucas, at the southern tip of the peninsula. Highway 19 runs north up the Pacific side to Todos Santos and La Paz. The East Cape and Cabo Pulmo sit on the Sea of Cortez side.

Cabo to Todos Santos

The easiest first trip. The whole drive is on Highway 19 heading north along the Pacific. Todos Santos is a Pueblo Mágico known for its art galleries and its historic center. On the way you pass Cerritos Beach, known for consistent surf, and El Pescadero with its farms.

Good for: a first night in the van, surf, sunsets, and an easy drive back.

Cabo to La Paz

Keep going north on Highway 19 past Todos Santos and you reach La Paz, the state capital, on the Sea of Cortez. It's a relaxed waterfront city and the jumping-off point for the island beaches nearby. Split the drive with a night in Todos Santos and it becomes a two-stop trip.

Good for: 4 nights or more, city food plus beach days.

The East Cape

The East Cape is the quieter side of Los Cabos: long empty beaches, small towns like La Ribera and Los Barriles, and far fewer people. How long it takes depends on which road you take out of San José del Cabo.

Good for: slowing down, fishing towns, beach camping away from the crowds.

Cabo Pulmo

Cabo Pulmo is a protected marine park known for its reef snorkeling. The coastal road north of San José del Cabo turns into bumpy dirt for stretches. Message me before you go and I'll tell you which road makes sense for the van that week.

Good for: snorkelers and anyone who wants the wild side of Baja.

Driving in Baja: a few tips

• Drive in daylight when you can. It's easier to see the road, the speed bumps and the views.
• Fill up the tank before heading into quieter areas, and carry some cash in pesos.
• Don't trust your phone's map blindly out on the East Cape. Ask me for the best route.
• Download offline maps before you leave Cabo. Vanterella has Starlink, but your phone might not have signal on the road.
